A Fictional Candidate to Present the Platform Feminists Are Waiting For !
As part of the election campaign, the Table de concertation féministe Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine launched a campaign on September 3 featuring a fictional character, Ms. Fay-Ministe, along with her feminist platform of demands, to spark public discussion about the issues faced by women in the region.
Ms. Fay-Ministe is not running in any electoral district, is not affiliated with any political party, and does not endorse any candidate. She is entirely fictional, but her platform focuses on real issues and puts forward real proposals.
Several gender inequalities affect women in Gaspésie and on the Magdalen Islands. Women in the region are still paying the price of systemic inequalities: they earn less than men, face major barriers to accessing health care, and can wait years for a childcare space. Women and girls are also disproportionately affected by sexual and intimate partner violence. These are not abstract issues, but ones with very real consequences for women’s lives.
Ms. Fay-Ministe, the candidate we don’t have, promises to fight women’s poverty, strengthen access to health care, ensure that every child has access to a childcare space, take real action against gender-based violence, including sexual and intimate partner violence, and much more.
