Because every child matters
Today marks National Truth and Reconciliation Day, which aims to commemorate and honour Indigenous children who survived residential schools and to remember those children who never returned home after being forcibly sent there.
It is a day of mourning and solidarity that invites us to learn more about the history of residential schools – a history that has long been overlooked – and about the long-term consequences for those who survived them.
A part of our team will participate in the events organized by the communities of the region. We invite you to join them:
- In Gesgapegiag : gathering at 9 am in the church’s parking and walk to the mawiomi (pow wow) grounds where the ceremony will take place
- In Gespeg : gathering at 10 am at the Gaspé arena and walk to the Berceau du Canada
Below, we have shared a few resources that will help you better understand this part of Canada’s colonial history and the consequences that residential schools continue to have today, even after the last residential school closed in 1996.
